Witch hazel festival

Hamamelis route

In the winter we welcome you to Arboretum Kalmthout for the Witch hazel festival. Originally everything revolved around the witch hazels (Hamamelis), but now all winter-flowering plants are celebrated. The arboretum garden specialises in this. A specially planned walking route takes you past all the winter-flowering plants. You can pick up the relevant route map from the reception desk.

Thematic walk - witch hazels and winter-flowering plants

From mid-January to the end of February there are Dutch-language guided walks every Sunday. The first walk starts at 11am and the last at 4pm. The walks last about one hour and take you past the witch hazels and other winter-flowering plants.

You can request a thematic witch hazel and winter-flowering plants walk at any other time.

Miss Witch Hazel contest

During this playful activity, the most beautifully flowering witch hazel is chosen. Are you the proud owner of a Hamamelis? Bring a branch in bloom with you and try your luck! Who knows, maybe your branch will take the title of "Miss Witch Hazel". All entries will be given a number, after which a professional and public jury will judge the branches. There are various categories: best red, best yellow, best orange, best perfumed, and an overall prize: the best of all.

Miss Witch Hazel takes place each year on the last Sunday in January.

Miss Hamamelis verkiezingen in Arboretum Kalmthout. Een jury staat binnen in de galerie rond een tafel met glazen vaasjes, waarin verschillende soorten gelabelde Hamamelis takken gepresenteerd zijn. Sommige takken hebben oranje bloemen, andere felgele.
